Alfie's Boys
What a magnificent piece of TV.... the BBC for all it's faults comes up with some absolute masterpieces... touching, funny and most of all humbling... best piece of TV I have ever seen about the 66 boys...

Bless em all

Mart. Agreed. I thought Jason's hammy faux-sentimentality really lowered the tone.

Watched this yesterday, well worth a look.

Sad to see the condition some of them are in. I thought Greavsie came across really well, top bloke. No surprise, I suppose, but Tina Moore seems like a really nice lady too.

On the other hand, it could really have done without all that wank with David Jason. I just don't know why the producers felt the need for all that additional sentimental bollocks.

Excuses excuses, I doubt the N Koreans were anything more than amateurs either

Re: Alfie's Boys
There was supposed to be a 4 team group of Australia, N Korea, S Africa and S Korea played in Japan.
S Africa were then banned for being big old racists and S Korea withdrew because the tournament was moved from Japan.

N Korea won both games and went into a playoff against the African winners.
Unfortunately all the 15 African teams weren't happy about the way spots were allocated in their groups so no one played at all and N Korea were off to the World Cup.

I think things were a bit shambolic in those days.
Even by the time Australia qualified for the 1974 World Cup they were entirely amateur players.

I recall that much unfancied North Korea knocked out Australia in the preliminary games, both legs played in neutral Cambodia

Re: Alfie's Boys
Ramsey used a winger in the first three games and when it wasn't working he changed things.
Greaves (an equivalent of Rooney) was out of form , injured but then available but Ramsey stuck with the less fashionable Hurst.
Ramsey picked players who may not have been outstanding but helped his stars and blended into the team .... J Charlton, Stiles, Hunt, Ball , Hurst etc

Under Roy I suspect England would have gone out to Argentina or Portugal.

Re: Alfie's Boys
Alf Ramsey - had a plan and selected the right players to carry it out.

Roy Hodgson - has some favourite players and adjusts his plan to accommodate them.

Let's see which one works best

Re: Alfie's Boys
Yeah North Korea knocked out Italy and gave Portugal a real fright, going 3-0 up before losing to an Eusebio inspired 5-3 loss, the Middlesborough crowds took North Korea to their hearts, probably because Middlesborough is just as bleak as North Korea :-)

Okay. I'll have a mess around later on and see if I can work it out. The page loads fine, it's just the video that doesn't.

Far. Does that link work for you? I tried looking at it earlier on, but it won't load for me. Maybe it's my browser or something.

Re the Korean team, absolutely. There's a great BBC documentary about that team: The Game of Their Lives. Well worth a watch if you haven't seen it.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rG-ivV-ps50
